The Daily5 is a simple guide for daily time with God. Five activities for five minutes each. Start with the short devotional below, then pick four more activities from the listed options. It's ok if you can only do three or four activities! Commit each day to complete at least one of the five.

1 John 2:7-11

7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old command that you have had from the beginning. The old command is the word you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 9 The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother or sister is in the darkness until now. 10 The one who loves his brother or sister remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But the one who hates his brother or sister is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and doesn’t know where he’s going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Summary:

Even if we claim to be “doing better” or even “doing well” on the outside, we deceive ourselves if there is hatred for others in our heart. Sometimes we’re even blind to it. John is suggesting we take a look down deep at the way we think about others.

Prayer:

Father, I want to walk in light, so please evaluate my heart as it relates to other people. Help me to genuinely love others today.

Reflection:

Is there anyone in my life who I’m holding a grudge against, bitter toward, or unwilling to love?
