Fasting: What and Why?

Fasting is not about what we’re giving up. It’s about what we’re gaining that is greater than what we could get if we didn’t give something up. It’s motivated by deep desire for God. It’s the intense pursuit of God - all about ingesting the Word of God, the presence of God, and the blessings of God.

Praying the Bible (written by Don Whitney at desiringgod.org)

Another discipline that helps grow our prayer lives and dependence on God is fasting. The Bible assumes we will abstain from some things - not normal in our day! Though usually this is food, you can fast from anything. As we focus on prayer this week, I encourage you to fast as well. This may mean missing a meal each day, not eating certain foods, or choosing to spend your time differently in order to focus on God. Click this link for an article by Sam Storms for more insight.
